- Stephen B Whatley with his original cartoon illustrations commissioned for publication in the memoirs of Mamie Van Doren – You Thought I Was Dead (Simon & Schuster 2026)
CARTOON ILLUSTRATIONS
Alongside his expressionist Fine Art, Stephen B. Whatley is also a cartoonist.
Stephen’s cartoons are unique in that they rebound against the tradition ofcaricature, which is generally derogatory. Stephen seeks, as with his Fine Art, to find beauty andthe heart of his subjects. He accentuates the positive!
For the past 25 years he has been creating a collection of deeply detailed cartoon tributes celebrating his love of the Golden Age of Hollywood and its stars.
Whilst his expressionist oil paintings have been published on the covers of several books (see PRESS page), his cartoons have been published as illustrations in several biographies, a Travel book and film history books.
In 2023 the 1950s/1960s Hollywood film star Mamie Van Doren reached out to Stephen by email, charmed by his cartoons that she had seen on the internet and commissioned him to create 14 detailed cartoon illustrations that uniquely depict the eclectic episodes in her life, to be published in her latest memoirs, You Thought I Was Dead. (Permuted Press/ Simon & Schuster) – out in May 2026.
Over the years, the artist has been a star attraction at celebratory events such as parties and weddings and openings – beginning with the opening of the Design Museum, London in 1989 – creating on the spot spontaneous caricatures from life; and undertaking personally commissioned cartoons from photographs – that make unique gifts.
