In 2000 Stephen B Whatley was commissioned
to paint 30 paintings for the Tower of London; including
a portrait of Sir Thomas More. This is one of two charcoal drawings made in
front ofthe portrait of Sir Thomas More of 1512
by an unknown artist (virtually identical to
the portrait by the Holbein in the Frick Collection in New York) owned
by the National Portrait Gallery and hung at Montecute House; to which the
artist was given access. Absorbing the portrait
through these drawings inspired the oil painting
to be seen here.
